Below is a list of FAQ (frequently asked questions) regarding water softeners and related issues. Please click on a question for a relevant answer

What is hard water?

When water is referred to as “hard” it means that in general it can contain more minerals than, say, ordinary water, especially calcium and magnesium.  The higher the content of calcium and magnesium the harder the water.

What is soft water?

Soft water is water that contains little or no calcium and magnesium.  There are varying levels of calcium and magnesium in our water supply depending on where you are situated in the country.

How do you remove the hardness?

Simply fit an Eau So Soft water softener.  Our machines collect the hardness minerals within the ion exchange resin vessels and from time to time flushes them to drain. This is called the regeneration process.

What is the Life Expectancy of a Water Softener?

At Phoenix Water Softeners Ltd we have supplied and installed the vast majority of manufacturers machines with varying success so we decided that we would use the most reliable control valves on our own brands of water softeners.  We have machines still in service using our Eau So Soft control valves that were fitted 30 years ago.

What Type of Salt is Used?

The Eau So Soft electric machines use tablet salt which is available in 10kg or 25kg bags.  Our non-electric block salt softener uses the 2 x 4kg brick sized block salt which comes in easy to carry packs.

Water Softener Running Costs?

Our water softeners are amongst the most reliable machines available.  A typical cost on salt would be around £1.95 per person per month.

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Water Softener?

A basic installation cost for a water softener that is to be fitted on a 15mm incoming water supply near the kitchen sink is approximately £225.00 inc VAT.  If you have a 22mm incoming water supply you would generally add £50.00 to allow for larger pipework and materials.  To get an exact price we do offer a free of charge no obligation quotation.

Are there different types of water softeners?

Yes there are a few different styles of water softeners available. The three main types and differences are listed below

Timer Control

These are our no frills, entry level softeners. You simply set the night you wish the water softener to regenerate on. This is based on the water hardness, easily checked with the hardness test kit provided.

Meter Control
Our meter control softeners take out all the guess work. Programme the water hardness and the water meter will let the softener know which days to regenerate. Meter control softeners will use considerably less salt than a timer control softener as they can adjust automatically for different demands.

Block Salt Softener
Our top of the range non-electric meter control water softener. These are amongst the smallest and most powerful machines available, suitable for most homes. They are probably the easiest softeners to install and operate; meter control, no electrics, no programming and the easiest to fill with salt. Simply insert two brick sized blocks of salt and away you go!

How long will it take to remove existing lime scale?

As soon as a water softener is switched on it will begin to dissolve lime scale in your pipework immediately. Within a few days you will begin to notice less hard water deposits appear on sanitary fittings. Dependant on the age of your heating/plumbing system and the incoming water hardness you can typically expect your pipes to be scale free within 1-2 years.

Which water softener is suitable for me?

The best way to find out what water softener would be best suited to you and your family is to book a free survey. By running a few simple tests including a water hardness and water pressure test we will be able to advise you on what water softener is not only cost effective to maintain but also suitable for your property.
